As you have probably guessed, my name is Simon Goldsmith. I am a UK based freelance photographer, currently residing in London.
Shooting for a hobby around my other work was how I got started. I come from a technical background (including years working with cameras). I developed a love of not only capturing moments but crafting or polishing them (maybe as a sculptor would).
The result is to achieve not just a digital record of a physical event but also an emotional dimension through final editing. When it is more than a photo, when you produce a memory.
This is crucial in creating engaging imagery for art, advertising, social media and other outlets. These networks require you to be able to inject a feel into your message. Resonance is key as that is what draws and keeps attention.
I spent years working for brands like Samsung and Panasonic in the photography and imaging fields. This is also where I not only developed my skillset with cameras, lenses and accessories but also my communication skills with the public. This has been invaluable when it comes to photographic work. Clients like to feel at ease and be well informed when working. This is something of a speciality of mine as sometimes portraits need to be done in minutes, not hours. I think my record is under 15 minutes. Some of those shots are in the gallery.
As far as my own photographic interests I don’t restrict by subject. For example, street photography, headshots, or products. The moment dictates the shutter button. How that place and time makes me feel. Because of this you will (over time) find a wide range of imagery on this site. People, buildings, sunsets, birds, flowers, whatever takes my fancy.
I think this gives me an advantage as I can approach subjects free of any style-based prejudice. Like when writing a song, think about the message and figure out how to communicate it. As opposed to saying you only do hip hop, so end up only using samples from hip hop packs and sounding like everybody else. Sometimes it’s good to get a fresh perspective.
I also have a background in creative writing (I love all creative outlets) so I will be writing a blog that others may either find entertaining, useful, thought provoking or all three. Over time I’ll be adding more photo and video work but because of the existence of social media I’ll be updating Instagram and Twitter more frequently.
Any specific questions just drop me a line.
